Want to grow your IBCLC private practice without exhausting yourself along the way?

Hi, I’m Annie Frisbie and I totally understand—I’m an IBCLC who runs a successful private practice in New York City.

In addition to homeschooling my kids and working one-on-one with my lactation clients, I’m the US Lactation Consultant Association’s 2018 President’s Award winner and have helped thousands of lactation consultants grow their businesses through my popular blog, online store, and podcast.

I believe in running an ethical, profitable, and sustainable business without running yourself into the ground. In fact, with the right systems in place, your business can feel totally in control and easy! Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way.

My IBCLC practice used to be a hot mess!

I’d passed the IBCLC so I had great clinical skills, but running a business? That was a whole other part of my work I wasn’t quite prepared for.

After tucking my kids into bed at the end of a long day, I’d basically work another shift—trying to make professional-looking pediatrician reports and client care plans (that I had to remember to print in the morning because I didn’t want to wake the kids).

I remember losing clients because my phone consultations weren’t structured. Sales intimidated me and it was probably obvious. Potential clients would basically extract a ton of free advice from me, hang up, and never book. I had no idea how to convince people I was worth their time and money.

While I had organized my practice the best I could—with my manila folders and chicken-scratched notes—everything about my business felt chaotic. I often couldn’t read my own writing, so creating client protocols took forever and I frequently had to re-do them because clients couldn’t decipher my vague, disjointed instructions. In fact, I remember one time (because I was so rushed and disorganized) I left the A/C adapter for my Tanita scale at a client’s home and was simply too embarrassed by my own unprofessionalism to ask for it back.

Yes…it’s true. A few years ago, my private practice was falling apart and it was so disheartening. I wondered, “was I even cut out to be a lactation consultant? Or was I going to have to change careers yet again?”

That’s when I decided enough was enough. I stopped duct taping everything together and winging it—and I decided to radically overhaul the way I work. After much research and trial and error, I fell in love with paperless charting systems and haven’t looked back!

The difference paperless charting makes…

  • My documentation is TIGHT. I make notes about everything that could possibly be relevant. I never worry I’ll lose track of what I said or did because it’s all in one place.

  • Adding protocols takes about 5-seconds because I use auto-text (which also makes it super easy to keep them up-to-date and loaded with helpful client-friendly links).

  • My clients are wowed by the experience of working with me—they’re delighted by the level of detailed care and efficiency. My care plans are comprehensive, easy-to-follow, and delivered as soon as the visit is over.

  • Pediatrician reports, billing or reimbursements, HIPAA compliant systems, and attorney-vetted contracts? Thanks to my structured systems, now it’s all a breeze.

  • Oh. And no more free phone advice;) I no longer lose my place (or confidence) during a consult. Because I’m on top of my game, I am able to communicate with professional ease.

My paperless systems take care of everything so I can focus my attention right where I want it: on the people I’ve been called to serve along their breastfeeding journey!

The IBCLC Private Practice Essential Toolkit is not right for you if you don’t plan to charge for your services, or feel 100% confident in your policies and procedure, or have no insecurities about the tech tools you’re currently using.

Wonder what it looks like to use the toolkit in your IBCLC private practice?

Here’s what you’ll do with the resources in your toolkit…

  • Research what you’d like to do for your business phone line using the Communications Services Comparison Chart an

  • Get your business infrastructure set up following the recommendations in Start to Strong and using the Private Practice Checklist Worksheet

  • Read the first part of Paperless Private Practice for the IBCLC (save the tech training for later)

  • Implement secure solutions for your email, fax, and document storage based on the recommendations in Paperless Private Practice and using the HIPAA Checklist

  • Research which charting platform you want to use using the EHR Comparison Chart. This might be a good moment to use your free Virtual Consult.

  • Print the module for the charting platform you’d like to use, and follow the step-by-step instructions to configure it for use. Or you can use the code in your Toolkit to hire me to do it for you.

  • Personalize the Consent for Care with your information and add it into your charting platform

  • Add Secure Messaging policies to your charting platform using the Guide to Secure Messaging

  • Create your payment policies for in- and out-of-network clients based on what you’ve learned in the Crash Course. Use the Fee Calculator if you’re in-network with insurance.

  • Customize the Superbill for out-of-network clients, or use the Tech Handbook to learn how your platform creates superbills

  • Read through the Social Media Disclaimers and Email Scripts and think about your own social media presence

  • Work through the Policies and Procedures Workbook using everything you’ve learned to write down how your private practice will work.

  • Build your website (or use the code in your Toolkit to hire me to build it for you). Make sure it includes the Website Terms and Conditions (and the Notice of Privacy Practices if you’re in the US)

  • Write up some protocols for your care plans and pediatrician reports using the links in the Resource Collection.
