Hi, I’m Annie Frisbie and I totally understand—I’m an IBCLC who runs a successful private practice in New York City.

My IBCLC practice used to be a hot mess! 

I’d passed the IBCLC so I had great clinical skills, but running a business? That was a whole other part of my work I wasn’t quite prepared for.

After tucking my kids into bed at the end of a long day, I’d basically work another shift—trying to make professional-looking pediatrician reports and client care plans (that I had to remember to print in the morning because I didn’t want to wake the kids).

I remember losing clients because my phone consultations weren’t structured. Sales intimidated me and it was probably obvious. Potential clients would basically extract a ton of free advice from me, hang up, and never book. I had no idea how to convince people I was worth their time and money.

While I had organized my practice the best I could—with my manila folders and chicken-scratched notes—everything about my business felt chaotic. I often couldn’t read my own writing, so creating client protocols took forever and I frequently had to re-do them because clients couldn’t decipher my vague, disjointed instructions. In fact, I remember one time (because I was so rushed and disorganized) I left the A/C adapter for my Tanita scale at a client’s home and was simply too embarrassed by my own unprofessionalism to ask for it back.

Yes…it’s true. A few years ago, my private practice was falling apart and it was so disheartening. I wondered, “was I even cut out to be a lactation consultant? Or was I going to have to change careers yet again?”

That’s when I decided enough was enough. I stopped duct taping everything together and winging it—and I decided to radically overhaul the way I work. After much research and trial and error, I fell in love with paperless charting systems and haven’t looked back!

  • My documentation is TIGHT. I make notes about everything that could possibly be relevant. I never worry I’ll lose track of what I said or did because it’s all in one place.

  • Adding protocols takes about 5-seconds because I use auto-text (which also makes it super easy to keep them up-to-date and loaded with helpful client-friendly links).
