IBCLC Private Practice Essential Toolkit

IBCLC Private Practice Essential Toolkit

Running a private practice as an IBCLC requires more than just your awesome clinical skills. You need to wrap your brain around the business, legal, and technical side of things.

The reality is that so many lactation consultants hit the ground running in their private practices without having a stable infrastructure in place first. And it’s not long before you’re not enjoying private practice the way you thought you would.

I’ve got some good news for you—private practice is hard, but it doesn’t have to consume you.

  • You can have a personal life.

  • You can have a workflow that feels good.

  • You can have boundaries with your clients

  • You can even make money!

I’m a private practice lactation consultant myself, and I know that piecing all of these elements together from different sources takes time and energy that might be better spent working with your clients. So to make your life easier, I’ve compiled what I believe to be the critical elements that every private practice lactation consultant needs.

You get road maps, strategies, checklists, legal documents, workbooks, and resources—and I’m constantly brainstorming new products that I think will equip you to create an efficient and sustainable private practice.

And because I’m an IBCLC, everything I create springs from the fundamental belief that recommendations are worthless unless you can apply them to your own unique circumstances. There are no cookie cutter ideas here, because I want you to be free to carve out your own path in a career that can be challenging and rewarding.

This Toolkit has every last thing you need to create and run your private practice—and free upgrades for life! That means any time I add a new product to the Toolkit, you get it for free.

Peek inside the Toolkit

Build a strong legal foundation

Customizable, attorney-reviewed consent for care, payment policies, secure messaging disclaimer, and social media policies to cover your bases and bring you into compliance with privacy laws. Develop your personalized policies and procedures and you won’t have to worry you’ve overlooked something crucial.

Charting templates and workflows

Complete education on the fundamentals and nuances of charting and documentation so you can choose the EHR platform that makes the most sense for the way you think and work. You’ll have access to charting templates that you can customize and use right away in most of the major lactation platforms, along with detailed instructions for a complete client workflow from intake through reporting.

Tools for productivity

Dynamic, searchable database of the best internet resources for supporting your clinical protocols, continually updated and available on any platform. Workflow hacks and phone/text/email scripts you can personalize to save you time.

Insurance billing and HIPAA demystified (US)

Up-to-date, comprehensive templates, forms, training, and tools to help you navigate the Affordable Care Act (whether you’re out-of-network or in-network) and HIPAA, all specifically designed with the private practice IBCLC in mind.

You may wonder if you can just piece all this together by yourself, and the answer is that sure, you can definitely give it a try. But how well does that work for the families we work with, when they turn to the internet to try to solve their breastfeeding problems? Exactly.

I bought the Toolkit a couple of weeks ago, and can’t put it down!! Thank you so much for creating this resource. I have been an IBCLC for more than 11 years and have always wanted to go into PP, but could never find the resources or confidence to do it. The Toolkit has finally helped me take my first steps. Thank you!!

Annie’s books, products, and services are worth so much more than she charges! The tool kit has saved me hours, and undoubtedly produced superior final products. After devouring her books, I used her service for EHR customization, and website design. It is all mine. She facilitated my own expression, of my IBCLC practice. Now, I am customizing my systems, like a #girlboss. Join her Facebook group, you’ll see.

The Toolkit is for you if:

  • You’re ready to make your private practice work for you

  • You know you can make improvements and need some guidance

  • You know you have what it takes for lactation private practice and want to do things right

  • You’re scaling rapidly and worried you can’t keep up because your systems are inefficient

  • You’re spending way too much time on charting, or your pediatrician reports, and you’re either staying up way too late or getting up way too early. Or worse—you’re cutting corners. Or not doing them at all.

  • You didn’t pay enough attention to HIPAA and you know you’re not as secure as you need to be, but the idea of tackling it feels just way too overwhelming so you ignore it.

  • You have a feeling you’re not as organized as you could be, but have no idea where to start.

  • You’ve been at this for awhile, but your disorganization has you feeling burned out.

Becoming a private practice IBCLC is a daunting and often overwhelming task— but Annie breaks down the entire process for you. From the nuts and bolts of starting a small business to the nitty gritty of what to do before, during, and after a home visit for lactation help, Annie holds your hand each step of the way. The world of lactation support is constantly changing, and this up-to-date, tech friendly manual saves you hundreds of hours of research and will position your business for success. Even seasoned private practice IBCLCs will learn from Annie as she discusses ways to publicize your business, improve your charting process, and set your social media policy. I’m confident this book will be the best money you’ve ever spent on your lactation practice.

Annie Frisbie recently published the book Paperless Practice for the IBCLC, which is an incredibly deep look into the mechanics exactly to take your private IBCLC practice digital and contains very heavily researched info on how to follow HIPAA and HITECH. It is an excellent example of how to ensure that what IBCLCs do is in line with how things are done across the board. I was so impressed with her commitment to the credential and her explanations on how following her suggestions can lead to better respect for the profession, assist in licensure and reimbursement efforts, and act as a lever to ensure that we don’t kick ourselves in the foot by skipping steps or being nonchalant about getting paid for our work outside of institutions. Plus, she writes about collaboration among IBCLCs in those metropolitan areas where there is competition, and her attitude about cooperation and compassion shines through.
